A Quiet Christmas: Soft Whites & Golden Glow
Some years I want Christmas to sparkle. This year, I want it to glow. There's a difference: sparkle is for showing off, and glow is for settling in. I'm choosing white ceramic trees that catch the lamplight, winter greens with red berries tucked into a white pitcher, and ornaments in soft gold that look like they've been loved for decades.
My rule for a quiet Christmas is simple: decorate in whispers instead of shouts. One glowing garland instead of three. A single beautiful wreath instead of a wall of them. When every corner is calm, the one lit tree in the room feels like a small miracle instead of just another decoration.
The palette does most of the work for me: soft whites, warm wood, and touches of evergreen. Against that quiet background, even the smallest red berry or golden bauble gets its moment. It's the same reason I love neutral rooms all year: restraint makes the lovely things lovelier.
If you're decorating this week, start with light before you start with things. A warm lamp, a candle, a string of tiny lights. Get the glow right first, and you'll need far fewer objects than you think. Then add greens, then one or two pieces you truly adore. That's the whole formula, and it has never failed me.
However your Christmas looks this year, I hope it feels like exhaling. Soft whites, golden glow, and evergreen details: a little warmth for the season, and a home that holds you gently through the darkest evenings of the year.
